20 institutions join DTCC token service, but only 34 securities qualify

The Depository Trust Company, DTCC’s securities depository, launched its Tokenization Service on Oct. 28, giving eligible institutions a way to move tokenized securities over weekends.

DTCC said 20 Participants had signed access agreements at launch, and the service’s launch scope allows conversion orders through its interface and API from 2 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time on business days, targeting completion within 15 minutes.

Already-tokenized securities can move 24/7 between DTC-registered wallets on the same blockchain.

The practical inference is that a firm relying on conversion for a weekend transfer needs to prepare its token inventory during a preceding business-day window.

Participation is voluntary and limited to eligible DTC Participants. The launch scope registers select third-party wallets and includes transfer restrictions, so a weekend plan also depends on the receiving wallet being registered.

DTCC conversion orders run 2 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET on business days, while existing tokens can transfer 24/7 between registered wallets on the same blockchain. Advance inventory preparation is an inference; collateral acceptance and cash payment need separate arrangements.
DTCC token conversions run during weekday windows, while same-chain transfers between registered wallets operate 24/7.

DTCC’s live product page lists 34 securities available to tokenize at launch. Eligible classes cover select Russell 1000 equities, exchange-traded funds and US Treasuries.

The tokens represent entitlements to securities held at DTC and retain their underlying legal rights, economic interests, and protections. DTC keeps the official books and records even when a token moves between registered wallets.

DTCC’s launch announcement identifies Canton Network and its private Besu network as the initial connections.

Cash and collateral need separate arrangements

A token reaching another wallet does not by itself establish that the recipient accepts it as collateral or that an associated cash payment has completed, nor does continuous transfer availability establish continuous stock trading.

At launch, Treasury distributions and maturity payments go in fiat to Participants’ traditional accounts.

With the service now live, a weekend plan starts with eligible tokens in registered wallets, an accepting recipient, and any necessary payment arrangements in place.
